Wicked Wildfire?

Vodafone customers are among the first HTC Wildfire owners to get Froyo on their handsets, almost immediately after HTC announced it was ready.

The network trumpeted the Android 2.2 update via its forum, while Wildfire owners on other networks could theoretically have to wait for Froyo into the New Year. However, Vodafone has pushed the update out to its customers almost immediately after HTC said it was ready.

On its Facebook page, HTC wrote: "We know many of you have been asking for information about an update for your Wildfire. Well, we have good news! Android 2.2 (aka Froyo) on Wildfire is scheduled to begin rolling out this week in Europe, reaching all areas of the world by February. Thanks for your patience as these updates roll out; we think you'll enjoy the final product."

While most Wildfire owners have been hankering after Froyo for a little while, the update may not make as much difference to their OS experience as it did when it was rolled out to Android owners with more powerful phones, such as the HTC Desire.

Vodafone said: "Live wallpapers and Flash support in the browser (Froyo features) are not supported due to hardware limitations".

However the update will bring Wildfires: Support for USB tethering, the possibility of installing applications to SD card, native support for Activesync Exchange (email, contacts and calendar sync) and security policies, multiple keyboard languages plus Wi-Fi hotspot tethering. It will also boost the phone's camera and Bluetooth support as well as improving the phone's speed and stability.

Wildfire owners on Vodafone should see an automatic message on their home screens or they can manually check for the update by selecting Menu from the home screen, tapping Settings, scrolling down the screen to About Phone and selecting System software updates, according to Vodafone.

There is currently no news as to when Wildfire owners on Three, Virgin or T-Mobile will get Froyo.
