Spreading like we don't know what
The HTC/Android conveyor belt churned out another handset today, with the launch of the Wildfire.
The press release talks about how great it is for social networking, but that's primarily a reference to HTC's Sense user interface. So the Wildfire seems primarily to be a lower-priced version of the Desire, made with younger consumers in mind.
"HTC Wildfire makes the HTC Sense experience available to young mobile users for the first time," said Florian Seiche, VP of HTC EMEA. "It brings all your communications into one place, whether it's through Facebook, Twitter, text messages, images or email, ensuring that you are never far away from the conversation and always close to your friends."
Features like social networking aggregator Friend Stream, Xobni-like caller ID and address book and a new app sharing widget are all highlighted. "For the first time ever, you can recommend the newest and coolest apps to a friend or group of friends with HTC Wildfire," said Seiche. "With so many applications to choose from, there's a world of content to discover and pass along to your friends."
The HTC Wildfire won't make an appearance until Q3, and seems to be limited to Europe and Asia. No price has been given but if it's any more than the HTC Legend - which you can currently get for ‘free' for £20 per month - then we don't see the point.
UPDATE - 16:30, 17 May 2010: We've just heard back from HTC's PR people that the Wildfire will be cheaper than the Legend. So that means we're looking at £15 per month or less for a ‘free' one.
