One vision

NVIDIA canned its big visual computing event - NVISION - after just one effort earlier this month, but it's apparently keen to keep plugging the brand.

I subscribe to NVIDIA's email newsletter, which sends me news of all the latest NVIDIA stuff on a semi-regular basis. The latest one was headed: "DON'T BE LEFT OUT OF THE VISUAL REVOLUTION. SUBSCRIBE TO NVISION NOW AND GET YOUR FIRST ISSUE FREE!"

It goes on to explain that a magazine called NVISION will be launched this June, published in association with NVIDIA, "that celebrates and examines the world of digital graphics in entertainment."

It's a 116 page glossy mag, published quarterly by Future in the US, and an introductory special offer means you can get hold of it for a mere $7 (around £4.80) per issue.

The subscription page lists a bunch of topics like "The Evolution of Graphics," and "Can a GPU detect breast cancer? Why the PC version is the best!" and concludes "116 pages and almost no ads!"

Now call me Mr Cynical, but how can a magazine written by a vendor be considered anything other than a great, big ad? I'm sure there will be some interesting content in there, but it uses an NVIDIA brand and even the NVIDIA font, and has the stated aim of promoting the digital graphics industry.

Obviously I haven't read the mag yet, but if it's anything other than an extended advertorial I'd be surprised and it's hard to see how such a thing could improve the reputations of either NVIDIA or the 'journalists' who write it.

What do you think - would you be happy to pay a fiver to read this kind of mag or do you think it's a bit cheeky of NVIDIA to ask you to pay for its direct marketing? Let us know in the HEXUS.community discussion forums.

Fixed that for you.

I wouldn't mind reading the mag as Im sure its pretty interesting but I would pay, Sony has done a similar thing, not sure if its still going or not. I got a free issue bundled with something else very enjoyable read if you could get past the constant bigging up of their products. But I sure as hell wouldn't pay to read it.
Spot on Scott - they must be mad. It must be the other way around - they pay us to read their adverts. Well, the world is full of fools, so who knows, they may sell some copies.
…never underestimate the size of nVidia's ego. They expect customers to pay for their spam.
