Everyone else's fault

The news that NVIDIA cancelled its NVISION visual computing fest, having only launched it last year, for 2009 at least, has already been widely reported. However we held-off on bringing you the news until we could get confirmation from NVIDIA itself.

We finally got it, but not much more, sadly. Here's the official statement: "Our inaugural NVISION, which drew nearly 10,000 people, was a highlight for NVIDIA, San Jose, and the computing industry in an otherwise challenging 2008. It blew away our expectations.

"Since the economy is affecting everyone's ability to travel, this year we plan to focus our attention on the core of the GPU development community with a more concentrated event. Details will be announced soon on this developer event, as well as the next NVISION."

While we share NVIDIA's sympathy for ‘everyone' and their struggles through the recession, we can't help finding NVIDIA's inference that it's only the state of the global economy that has caused this U-turn a tad disingenuous.

In its recent annual report NVIDIA revealed declining sales and margins and reminded us of the $196 million it's had to set aside to cover charges associated with ConnectorGate. Surely these and other demands on NVIDIA's cash reserves have at least some part to play in this decision.
