Social super hero

Warner Bros. and Facebook have joined hands allowing movie fans to rent movies through the social networking site. They might soon run a trial of the program that might offer movies for sale or rental through its fan pages on Facebook.

To start off with, you might be able to use your Facebook currency to digitally rent The Dark Knight on its fan page. Facebook fans could rent a movie for 30 Facebook Credits or $3, for a two-day period. You can also pause and resume play whenever you want over the 48 hours. Watching the movie doesn't mean you can't do the usual ‘Facebook-ing.' You can still post comments, check updates and interact with friends.

"Facebook has become a daily destination for hundreds of millions of people," said Thomas Gewecke, president of Warner Bros. Digital Distribution. "Making our films available through Facebook is a natural extension of our digital distribution efforts. It gives consumers a simple, convenient way to access and enjoy our films through the world's largest social network."

Combining social networking and entertainment, the move makes for an interesting twist to the video on demand market. The trial will currently run only in the U.S., and additional titles will be added on a regular basis over the coming months, Warner Bros. said, having also recently launched the app edition of The Dark Knight for iOS.

For this to really work we need to see more TV's and devices that connect to a TV to have online access to Facebook and this streaming service.

A movie service just aimed at people sat in front of a computer won't be successful.
Am I the only one who clicked thinking that the title was referring to this Batman joining Facebook? :P

Anyway, I'm not sure whether this will work when there are already the likes of Netflix, Lovefilm, Amazon etc. with streaming services. I agree with Brewster0101 that for it to have a chance with Facebook users it would probably need TV connectivity.
I think you guys are vastly underestimating the power of facebook…

Sure it might not be the best place to watch movies…. but i bet hundreds, even thousands of people will sit infront of facebook commenting and chating away whilst watching films they just rented from the comfort of facebook… such a wide and captive audience…

what better place to stage the beginning of a new pay to watch movie service?
According to TechCrunch, it appears that it's not a new service or anything after all, just that Warner Bros. did a Facebook app for people to watch The Dark Knight.

Apparently Hulu and Netflix are already connected to Facebook via Facebook Connect anyway.
