Optimal timing?

LG's eagerly anticipated smartphone, the Optimus 2X has been spotted on Expansys' website, which lists the release date as 21 February in the UK.

The phone is the first to run NVIDIA's Tegra 2, which in turn is the first dual-core SoC to appear in a phone and is due to go on sale in Korea this month. It initially comes with Android Froyo but will upgrade to Gingerbread eventually.

At launch, LG had said Europe and the rest of Asia would get the handset later on.

According to Expansys' website, the phone will go on sale on 21 February for £499.00.

Interestingly the website lists the Optimus 2X's plus points as powerful with ‘impressive' full 1080p HD record plus output and DNLA.

However is also said the ‘LG custom interface isn't as polished as its rivals' as well as complaining about a weak LED flash on an otherwise ‘great' camera and added: "Rear metal/plastic back is a love/hate design feature."

Of course most people will want to scoop LG's handset via a contract plan but there is currently no news from UK networks on pricing plans or confirming the release date.

Here are some specs from the launch:

  • 1Ghz Dual-core Processor (NVIDIA Tegra 2)
  • 4-inch WVGA screen
  • 8GB memory (up to 32GB via microSD)
  • 1,500 mAh battery
  • 8 megapixel rear camera and 1.3 megapixel front camera
  • HDMI mirroring
  • 1080p MPEG-4/H.264 playback and recording
