Stiff competition
BT has revealed the five communities that could get super fast broadband as part of its Race to Infinity competition, but other contenders are hot on their heels as the competition enters its last month.
Thousands of people have entered the competition since its launch on 1 October where five places with the largest percentage of votes by New Year's Eve should get fibre optic broadband in their area.
With less than one month left until the winners are decided, the five areas leading the field are:
- Blewbury, Oxfordshire
- Caxton, Cambridgeshire
- Castleton, Newport
- Madingley, Cambridgeshire
- Whitchurch, Hampshire
However, hot on their heels are: Burley in Wharfedale in Bradford, Sutton on Sea in Lincolnshire, Market Drayton in Shropshire, Malvern in Worcestershire and Barrow in Furness in Cumbria.
According to BT, over 290,000 votes have been cast across the UK. While the 5 winning areas will get upgraded by early 2012, BT has also vowed to engage with communities where over 75 percent of homes and businesses have voted for super fast broadband. People can still vote at: www.bt.com/racetoinfinity.
John Petter, MD of BT's consumer division, said:"Thousands have voted, but there is still a long way to go before we reach the finishing line and everything to play for. Superfast speeds can transform your online life whether you're social networking, gaming, streaming video, uploading or downloading. So please vote now and don't forget to spread the word by passing it on to your friends on Facebook and Twitter to get your area to the top of the scoreboard."
