The well documented teething problems of Microsoft's controller-less, motion-sensing peripheral for the Xbox 360 don't seems to have done anything to dampen demand. Microsoft has announced that in the first 25 days of it being available, 2.5 million have been sold - that's 100,000 per day, maintaining its fast start.

To put that into context, the previous fastest selling new category was the Apple iPad, which started off at around a million units per month and, in turn, surpassed the DVD. As readwriteweb points out, the current rate is pretty much double that of the iPad, while the average selling price is less than half. It must be noted that these figures do include the recent Black Friday frenzy.

"We are thrilled about the consumer response to Kinect, and are working hard with our retail and manufacturing partners to expedite production and shipments of Kinect to restock shelves as fast as possible to keep up with demand," said Don Mattrick, president of the interactive entertainment business at Microsoft. "With sales already exceeding two and a half million units in just 25 days, we are on pace to reach our forecast of 5 million units sold to consumers this holiday."

"Kinect on Xbox 360 was a top performer at Target this weekend," said Nik Nayar, VP of merchandising at Target, as US retailer. "We expect Kinect will be a must-have gift this holiday season, so Target will continue to receive consistent shipments of Kinect throughout December."

With Windows Phone 7 also being well received, although we're unaware of any published sales figures, Microsoft is doing a good job of diversifying away from PCs just as the market is in the process of doing. Whether these successes will be enough to ultimately fend off the likes of Apple and Google remains to be seen.

Isn't it usually at this point that some patent troll comes sliming out of the woodwork with a lawyer in tow? (must be less cynical in future) :censored:

Not got much liking for Microsoft, but is it me or are they undergoing a bit of a renaissance in the past year? Windows7 seems to be well liked, HomeServer doesn't seem to be the waste of space that some were predicting (and yes I did read the recent kerfuffle about Drive Extender), the latest XBox respin seems to be quite good (certainly the one I traded in for is), Windows7 phone seems to be doing okay, and now Kinect is doing well.

Even with the WHS v's DE issue, they give the appearance of being less evil than they were previously (offering to “review” the decision). So if these are the signs of a “less evil” MS then I give it a thumbs up. As such I wish them well with Kinect.

Naiveté aside, I'm still praying hard that they haven't bought the Linux patents from Novell though …
Intro on Hexus home page has what I think is a typo: "The motion-sensing gaming controller surpasses the iPad with a rates of 100,000 units per day."

I have to agree with crossy, a very different Microsoft is emerging which seems to be welcomed by it's customers. I'm pleased with Windows 7 so far :D
I'm still not convinced with Kinetic - It has no killer games that I can see yet. It also feels very expensive for what it is. Maybe that's just me but I'm not going to purchasing on just yet. I'd rather have a new PC graphics card for that kind of money.

So I guess you're not that impressed with Forza 4 (spotted the logo for FM3 on your sig) where we're supposed to be able to use Kinect to “drive” the car and do MP with other folks being pit crew. Think that the driving bit could be pretty poor, but the pit crew stuff could be good for a giggle.

Besides I thought you were saving for a Sony Live View for your X10 … :D

(he says, … ducking and running in the opposite direction as fast as possible)

Joking aside, it's early days for Kinect so it's common sense that the best games are yet to hit the street. Good sales figures for it have got to be an incentive to encourage developers to pick up on it. What interests me is what the XBLA community can do with it - since there seems to be a lot of real clever folks on there at the moment.
