Local hero?

BT has lifted the lid on which UK location is leading the race so far to secure super-fast fibre broadband.

Caxton in Cambridgeshire and Malvern in Worcestershire are the first communities to have registered more than 1000 votes and are currently leading the race, BT said.

BT launched its Race to Infinity back in October to gauge local demand for faster broadband in the form of a nationwide survey with the five UK areas which secured the most votes from locals living there getting an upgrade by early 2012.

BT will also ‘engage' with communities that lose out on the prize where at least three quarters of residents have voted for fibre broadband.

The company said around 200,000 people have voted so far, spanning the UK. The race runs until 31 December when the five winners will be decided, influencing the company's future deployment plans.

Peter McCarthy-Ward, BT's East of England regional director, said: "This is fantastic news for Caxton and Cambridgeshire as a whole. Communities across the East of England have really been demonstrating demand for fibre broadband. However there is still quite a way to go until we reach the finishing line and everything to play for."

"I hope news that these communities who have already registered 1000 votes will spur people into action as this data will help BT determine where fibre broadband will be deployed in the coming years," he added.

BT will have rolled out super fast broadband to 4m premises by the end of this year but has 12m more homes and businesses to reach as part of its plan to deliver fibre broadband to two thirds of the UK by 2015.
