One ‘likes’?

Just one day after making her Facebook debut, the Queen's new page on the social network has attracted thousands of fans but also a number of abusive remarks, which the palace web team has censored.

Some 150,000 people have ‘liked' the British Monarchy page since it went live yesterday and have adorned it with comments and photos, but it has also acted as a magnet for debate about the validity of the monarchy, with anti-royalists using it to make their views heard, The Guardian reported.

Some less than adoring comments have reportedly come from republicans and Cornish nationalists as well as Argentineans irked about the Falklands Island debate, which continues to rumble on.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman told the newspaper that its moderators had been forced to take down abusive comments, but reportedly stressed it is not just targeting republican views.

He reportedly said: "Spamming is a common problem on Facebook, The site has systems in place to report and block spammers and the web team is using the tolls available to block offensive comments."

While users can ‘like' the royal family's Facebook page and receive updates on their movements, they cannot ‘poke' the Queen or ask her to be their friend.

Although the launch seems to have incurred a little wrath, a whole host of online spoof pages have reportedly sprung up, including the Queen pictured wearing various football shirts and even a McDonald's uniform.

Buckingham Palace has been working hard on its online presence of late, perhaps in a bid to become more relevant to the younger generation. It has reportedly already attracted around 70,000 followers on Twitter and its YouTube channel has attracted over 33,000 subscribers.
