Firmware fireworks

We have no idea if this is deliberate or not, but Samsung has really cramped Sony Ericsson's style today. While finally upgrading the Experia X10s of UK users to Android 2.1 is a case of better late than never, such little triumph as SE could claim was surely removed by the update of the Samsung Galaxy S to Android 2.2 earlier today.

SE has been way behind the pack when it comes to Android updates. While all other OEMs have been at version 2.1 for most of this year, with the likes of HTC wasting little time getting to 2.2, SE users have been stuck with 1.6, and haven't been too happy about it. So while they'll welcome the arrival of 2.1, that's unlikely to see an end to the muttering.

Perhaps unsurprisingly SE has been pretty quiet about the roll-out, which actually commenced across Europe at the start of the week. It took a tip from HEXUS reader Barry Davidson (cheers Baz) to bring the relevant tweet to our attention.

In years to come, when you're relating the birth of the mobile Internet to your grandchildren, perhaps you'll refer to 5 November 2010 as ‘belated Android update Friday', then again maybe not. For more information on these updates you can access the Sony Ericsson product blog here. Let us know how it goes.

Update is not available in the uk yet my phone says software up to date at 1.6
Got 2.1 on my X10 at 10:00 this morning. Finally!!! Been long enough but I've got to say SE have done a good job of implementing it. Like having a new phone. Lets hope they get 2.3 out sharpish.

(I've seen rumours X10 minis are not yet getting it?)
@danroyle - It might be worth checking you have the update tool set to check for updates when phone is connected. By default it only checks every two days…

Remember that - according to Mr Skogberg's blog comments - that it's only the generic UK firmware that's out. So the poor folks (like me) who aren't running an unbranded phone will have to wait until the teleco's get their finger out.

Oh, and if you're on Three then the position, (as of 1st November), was "we can confirm that the X10 will be getting an upgrade to version 2.1 OS over the next few weeks, afraid I cannot commit on a date at the moment." (according to the comments on http://blog.three.co.uk/2010/02/23/smartphone-is-king-in-2010/)

My jealousy knows no bounds …
That said my “Rachel” is running fine, and not causing me much in the way of problems - be nice to be able to try out Angry Birds though. Guess when Three get that update to me it'll be something to look forward to.

Trust me - I understand. I've been wait for this update for months now. I think I must have visited the SE product blog about a 1000 times (and that is no joke).

And yes angry birds does work. Also if your desperate the XDA forums do have guides on debranding however personally I'd wait (as I have done since the nordic firmware came out on Sunday - XDA had a guide for flashing that - I don't to risk a Ā£400 device for the lack of patience.).
