The race is on

London homes and businesses in Parsons Green, Merton Park, Mile End, Skyport and New Cross will get access to BT's fibre-based broadband offering.

The role out on these areas will potentially benefit around 90,000 people and the company said the fibre to street cabinets offer download speeds of up to 40Mbps, with the possibility fo supporting 60Mbps and upload capacity of 10Mbps in future.

Duncan Ingram, BT's London regional director, said: "The advent of BT fibre-based broadband in these parts of the capital will support local jobs and the local economy and is a vital part of BT's broadband plans for London. As our roll-out of super-fast, fibre-based broadband gathers pace, many more customers in other parts of the capital can look forward to faster speeds in the pipeline.

"London is already one of the best connected cities in the world and our investment plan will ensure that it stays ahead of the pack. Our investment will see Londoners have access to both fibre and advanced copper broadband services well in advance of the London Olympics," he added.

Meanwhile, the village of Todmorden is currently leading BT's Race to Infinity in Calderdale to secure super fast broadband before 2012.

BT promised that 5 local communities with the most votes for their super-fast service would get it within 2 years as part of its nationwide competition.

According to local newspaper The Halifax Courier, although Todmorden has the highest number of votes at the moment, another village relatively nearby called Hipperholme has the ‘highest percentage of votes based on the number of people living there.'

However, both villages had better watch out as the contest does not close until 31 December, leaving plenty of time for other places to catch up.
