The UK is ‘not ready for tomorrow' in terms of supporting next generation broadband, according to a new report, while another warns a broadband crunch is coming.

Cisco's annual broadband report ranks countries according to the quality of their internet services and this year, the UK has come 18th out of 72 countries. While this may not be fantastic news, the report does demonstrate some improvements have been made as it ranked 25th last year, but Korea has topped the chart again.

The report found the average broadband speed in the UK is now 6.4Mbps, more than double that in 2008 and above the global average of 5.9Mbps.

The University of Oxford's Saïd Business School and Spanish University of Oviedo, analysed a lot of data including the quality of broadband (speed of the connection plus latency) and the penetration of internet services to come up with the pecking order.

It found that 14 counties are now ready for the ‘applications of tomorrow' including tech savvy Japan, Korea and Sweden as well as perhaps the less likely Bulgaria and Portugal.

Here's a table of the top 10.
