Over half of Twitter app Tweetdeck's beta testers use Android 2.2, while the HTC Desire is the most popular phone for microblogging die-hards, according to new figures.

Tweetdeck's stats amassed from its 36,427 active beta testers found ‘what might be considered as extreme fragmentation' across the Android ecosystem.

A blog post details a ‘massive variety' of phones and Android OS versions, but the most popular handset was HTC's Desire, followed by the Motorola Droid and the Nexus One.

Meanwhile, 57 percent of the testers used Android 2.2, 35 percent 2.1 Eclair, while just 9 percent battle with version 1.6, despite it still running on a number of popular handsets.

The blog said: "We were really shocked to see the number of custom roms, crazy phones and general level of customization/hackalicious nature of Android. From our perspective it's pretty cool to have our app work on such a wide variety of devices and Android OS variations."

Here is a chart from ubergizmo to demonstrate the huge variety of handests used.
