Just for newbies

HTC has launched a service similar to Apple's MobileMe for its customers.

HTC smartphone owners can register to remotely manage their phones running the latest version of Sense, but the only catch is customers will have to own a Desire HD or Desire Z.

The company recently trumpeted its two handsets and updated user interface, as well as teasing the new website, HTCSense.com, which went live today.

The ‘Find my Phone' function is the jewel in the crown and lets owners locate a lost phone. The feature will make the phone ring loudly, even overriding silent mode, show its whereabouts on a map plus forward all calls to a different number and send a retrieval message or reward message to the handset in case a stranger finds it.

"And in the worst case - if you see that your phone is someplace that it definitely should not be (like the train tracks headed out of town), use HTCSense.com to lock it and erase all the personal data from it," the official website said.

Allowing HTC phone users to back up their messages, the new platform also allows people to send and receive SMS messages from their computer plus sync their contacts lists and address book. There is also a function to add pictures from the computer to the phone and add details saved on the phone to the computer for safe keeping.

The website also lists a range of HTC tested and reviewed apps that users can install and share with friends. There is also a library of wallpapers, sounds and widgets for people to customise their new handset.

HTC has only just launched the two phones which are due to hit UK stores soon.  While the Desire HD sports a 4.3 inch screen, 8MP camera and 720p video, the Desire Z touts a smaller screen but slide-out Qwerty keyboard for strong social networking credentials.

"HTCSense.com provides customers with the additional ability to customise and control their handset experiences," said Peter Chou CEO of HTC.

As Android is widely adopted by multiple phone manufacturers, firms look likely to conceive new services to differentiate their offerings and entice new customers and HTC's new website could prove one such example.

Ugh, why can't they name different bits, er, differently?

Had my hopes up and everything….*

*this may be a lie
as long as it doesn't use ActiveSync or Sync Center then it can't be too bad.

Really love the find your lost mobile feature. There is a blog out there about a guy who lost his iphone while at a lego con and then used the apple version of this to track it.
