Loosening the shackles

When Motorola launched the Milestone XT720 back in June we assumed the chip inside it was the same TI OMAP 3430 that you find in the original Milestone, due to the published CPU clock speed of 550MHz.

But it turned out to be the faster evolution of that chip - the 3440 - which TI says has a maximum speed of 800MHz. Motorola had, for some reason, reduced the speed of the chip. But now that move has been reversed through a software download for UK and German XT720 owners.

The update, mentioned only via a short message on Motorola Europe's Facebook page, takes the speed of the chip up to 720MHz - a pretty hefty jump. It also introduces some DLNA functionality, which will enable it to stream media to and from other DLNA devices, and is not to be confused with the minor OTA update also released for the Milestone last week.

That's about it really, we don't know what the chip was originally slowed down, or why Moto didn't just go with the 1GHz OMAP 3640 is put in the Milestone 2. But a free 170MHz is better than a kick in the teeth.

In the Facebook bulletin, Motorola also pointed to a new vid it has made to advise how to get the best out of the XT720 camera.
