Big hopes
Nokia's N8 smartphone is tipped to make its UK debut on 1 October, according to The Daily Telegraph.
The phone, which was first announced in April, boasts a 12 megapixel camera, Carl Zeiss lens, Xenon flash plus HD- quality video recording and Dolby surround sound in an aluminium shell. It's a package Nokia hopes will challenge Apple and Google Android's smartphone supremacy.
The N8 is powered by Symbian ^3 which will include multi touch improvements and host apps from the recently much-publicised Ovi store. It also touts improved 2D and 3D graphics for a more responsive UI, social networking feeds plus a more user friendly task manager.
Although Nokia has held on to its title of the world's largest mobile phone producer, its market share in high-end mobiles in developed has slumped and the firm reportedly hopes its N8 and forthcoming N9 offerings can change its fortunes.
The company is keen to boost its presence in the Western world's smartphone market as its bread-and-butter market selling basic phones to the developing world is rumoured to be shrinking as people snap up even cheaper Chinese offerings.
The newspaper said the N8 will cost around £429 for pay-as-you-go customers, while it is planned to be offered free to consumers opting for a £35 a month mobile tariff.
The highly anticipated N9 handset will reportedly be Nokia's first phone to use the new MeeGo OS and further details are expected at Nokia's World Summit in London next week.
