Microsoft's director of games platform strategy is jumping ship to join Amazon, which apparently has gaming hopes.

Writing in a blog, Andre Vrignaud said: "Can't really talk about details at this point, but it'll become pretty evident soon enough... and you all know where my passions lie."

"I make this announcement with mixed emotions as I'm excited about where Microsoft is going in the next few years as they look to reinvent digital entertainment... but I'm also obviously very intrigued about what Amazon is looking to do."

Vrignaud also said a shorter commute and the fact his dogs would be allowed at work tipped the balance towards Amazon too!

The Xbox exec's timing might add to rumours of Amazon's rumoured intention to diversify its hardware products, adding possible MP3 players or even a TV proposition to its e-reader line-up.

According to Electronista, the etailer is working on a gaming project to offer a service or even a gaming device and has been hiring a new team, of which Vrignaud appears to be one.

While Amazon is increasingly aggressive in the TV show download space, many commentators believe the company is likely to compete with Apple in terms of portable touch screen hardware too...a tablet?
