Extra Desire-able
Taiwanese phone manufacturer HTC has rolled out the Android 2.2 Froyo update for its Desire handset.
As well as boasting the complete set of Android 2.2 features, including a redesigned launcher, support for Adobe Flash 10.1 and ability to use a phone as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, it also contains a few extras from HTC though its latest update of HTC Sense.
HTC Desire owners will now benefit from 720p video capture, HTC's App Share widget, enhanced caller ID plus an improved multi-language keyboard. Users are also be able to sync their music with iTunes.
HTC said the update will not delete any of the phone's content but advised owners to use a Wi-Fi connection to download the update to avoid potential extra data charges due to the software's hefty size.
Some Desire owners should have received notification of the update this weekend past, with news popping up when the phone automatically checks for software updates.
Unlocked HTC Desire Handsets have or will receive the update first, while operator specific versions of the update are undergoing testing and are expected to be available in a matter of weeks, according to HTC.
Internet whispers suggest users on T-Mobile may have to wait until September for the update, while O2 is believed to be holding onto the software for extra testing but is hotly tipped to release it in the coming weeks.
In a Twitter update, Orange UK PR manager, Conor Maples said: "We are working with HTC to bring the 2.2 Android update to Desire customers as soon as we can. This process normally takes about four weeks."
HTC's Desire handset is the second smartphone to access Google's Froyo update as Android 2.2 has already been released to Google's Nexus One phone in June, although it lacks HTC's extras.
