Jailbreaking jeopardy

The first jailbreak for iPhone 4 has been released by a hacker to allow handset-owners to modify their phone, but some jailbreakers have reported problems including broken FaceTime.

According to unofficial Apple blog Apple Insider, ‘Comex,' a hacker and member of Apple's iPhone Dev Team, released the browser-based jailbreak via jailbreakme.com

The practice of jailbreaking was declared legal last week despite Apple's protests, as the company warned users who jailbreak their phone could void its warranty.

However, some users who have tried jailbreaking their iPhone 4 have complained via Twitter it has broken MMS and FaceTime functionality, while ‘Comex' is reportedly ‘working on a fix'.

This jailbreak reportedly differs from previous efforts as it is done within the Safari browser, not relying on tethering a phone to a user's computer which has the jailbreak software on. Prospective jailbreakers just have to visit the website on thier phone, which then adjusts iOS 4.

It remains to be seen whether many iPhone 4 users will jailbreak their handsets, allowing them to run un-Apple-authorised apps on their mobiles, or whether the use of pirate app stores will soar, one major reason Apple said it opposed jailbreaking being made legal.

Just jailbroke my 3GS and now have access to SBsettings again !

http://jailbreakme.com is a bit overloaded, there's a mirror at http://jailbreakme.modmyi.com
(just open either site on safari on iPhone to jailbreak)
