Extension extras

Apple has released Safari 5.0.1 with Safari Extensions, enabling users to customise their browser with extra toolbars and programmes.

Apple introduced extensions support to Safari 5 in June to let developers get on with creating extensions to HTML5, CSS3 and JaveScript web standards. Users can add extensions such as toolbars that display live web feeds, to programmes that filter web content from the Safari Extensions Gallery.

Extensions can be automatically updated and managed within Safari, allowing users to enable or disable individual extensions, or turn off all extensions with one click.

In a bid to boost security, every Safari Extension has a digital certificate from Apple to verify any updates come from the developer and are also sandboxed so developers cannot access information on a user's system.

Extensions include offerings from Amazon, Twitter and Bing.

Jeff Henshaw, general manager of Bing user experience, said: "When a user selects text in Safari, Bing instantly recognises what they might need and pops up helpful, informative tips, from real time maps and driving directions to real time translations to direct web search results."

Users can build the ‘add to Amazon wish list' extension that lets them add items from any website to their Amazon list, while fans of The New York Times can browse other sites with Safari while the extension checks for breaking news and slides in new headlines and thumbnails.

Jason Goldman, vice president of product at Twitter, said: "By providing features like the ability to tweet about a page and view trending topics, we've created a simple way to deliver relevant, interesting content to people regardless of where they are on the web."

The updated operating system features Safari Reader, which presents single and multipage articles on the web in a redesigned scrollable view. It also includes more than a dozen new HTML5 features for creating media-rich experiences, like full screen playback and closed captions for HTML5 video.
