Nothing to see here
At an unprecedented press conference, called with only a few days notice, Apple has addressed the issues with the new antenna design of the iPhone 4, which have led to dropped calls when held in a certain way.
Apple started the event by playing the video below - good marks for sense of humour. Apple CEO Steve Jobs then took the stage and began with a lengthy explanation of why this isn't an issue at all, while stressing that this non-issue is one that affects all other phones too.
He admitted that they knew the reception bars would go down if you held the phone in a certain way, but said they didn't think it would be an issue.
Referring to the coverage as Antennagate, there were a fair few digs at the media for over-reporting the problem. To us that's a bit rich when Apple is such a beneficiary of media hype before a product launch and doesn't seem have any problem with that.
Anyway, even though this isn't an issue, Apple wants to sort it out. So it's offering a free case to every iPhone 4 owner or a refund to anyone who already bought one. Jobs then moved on to announce a white iPhone 4 and reveal that a bunch more countries will get the phone soon.
UPDATE - 19:00 16 July 2010 - There was yet more remonstrating with the media about how they don't give Apple the benefit of the doubt and just want to knock Apple down because it's so successful. That really is a bit rich. Jobs even accused the media of chasing reads. What does he think we're doing whenever we write about Apple - positively or negatively?
