Apple is rumoured to be working on updating its tired Apple TV software including a redesigned interface.

Anonymous sources told the New York Times it is unclear whether Apple plans on developing a completely new television proposition as well as the software update and mooted the possibility of the firm basing a new offering on its iOS operating system.

Launched back in 2006, Apple CEO Steve Jobs had high hopes for Apple TV, with the potential to equal the success of the iPod or Mac, but he then started referring to it as a ‘hobby'.

A source reportedly said Apple has hired a handful of graphics designers and user interface experts who all have experience in television, while another allegedly said another Apple group outside the Apple TV team was working it, perhaps hinting at a completely new proposition.

Experts told the New York Times the iOS software would give people access to internet pay-TV applications like Hulu or Netflix, allowing them to stream TV and films on-demand.  They also think it is only a matter of time before Apple tries to muscle its way back into the heart of the home, having focused on mobile products such as the iPad and iPhone.

However, with IPTV offerings in the pipeline from the likes of Google and Project Canvas, Apple will be in for a fight.
