Over 1.7m people rushed out and bought an iPhone 4 within three days of its launch. Apple fans seemed not to be put off by well-publicised problems of holding the phone the ‘wrong' way reducing reception, snapping up 1.7m phones from the launch on Saturday 26 June to 24 June.

The ever modest Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, says the iPhone 4 is the "most successful product in Apple's history. Even so, we apologise to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply."

As fans worldwide clamoured for the new handset, pre-orders for the fourth generation smartphone sold out on the day of launch, reportedly topping 600,000 units. Apple stores in the US and UK are advising customers who have placed a new pre-order, they are likely to have to wait for the highly anticipated handset until 2 July.

The iPhone 4'sFaceTime video calling capability, lush high-res Retina display, 5MP camera with HD recording and new A4 processor among other features have seen people queue round the block to order the latest phone.

The pre-ordering frenzy is particularly remarkable considering consumers buying a SIM-free handset will have to fork out a massive £599 for a 32GB model.  Even with an 18-month contract at £35 per month, users will have to rustle up an extra £229 for the sumptuous phone.

Currently available in the US, UK , France, Germany and Japan, we expect another 18 countries to go iPhone crazy at the end of July when it is launched in: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
