Galactic choice
Samsung Mobile has launched a new member of the Galaxy S family on the Sprint network in the US. The Epic 4G is Samsung's first 4G phone and appears to be the rumoured Galaxy S Pro, in that is has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.
Other than that it appears to be similarly specced to the Galaxy S that is currently exclusive to Vodafone in the UK. I.e. Android 2.1, 1GHz Hummingbird ARM Cortex A8 SoC, super AMOLED touchscreen and various bits of Samsung software, including the Samsung Media Hub.
"Samsung Epic 4G is a powerful member of our Galaxy S smartphone portfolio which offers premium screen, speed and content features," said Omar Khan, chief strategy officer for Samsung Mobile. "The Epic 4G ups the ante with a front-facing camera for video conferencing, a full QWERTY keyboard and lightning-fast 4G speeds."
A Samsung spokesperson told us there are no plans to bring this handset to the UK, but that could merely be in reference to the Sprint version of it. There's no reason why we shouldn't see some take on the Galaxy S Pro before long.
One thing seems clear: if we do it will have a different name. Samsung has also launched variations of the Galaxy S on several different US carriers today, each with a different name. So on Verizon we have the Fascinate, on T-Mobile the Vibrant, but just boring old Galaxy S on US Cellular. It's already been unveiled as the Captivate on AT&T.
