Market researcher Quantcast has just published its figures for North American mobile web consumption according to the operating system used, and they reveal Google's Android is stealing significant market share from Apple's iOS.

While iOS devices - mainly the iPhone, but also iPod, while Quantcast excludes iPad for now - still have a massive lead with 58.8 percent of the total market, it was more like 75 percent at the start of 2009. Meanwhile Android has increased its share from around five percent a year ago, to 19.9 percent now.

In other words Android has stolen 15 percent of market share from iOS in that time. The remaining 20 percent or so is divided evenly between BlackBerry and all the rest - Windows, Symbian, webOS, etc.

This research follows on from a Quantcast study of a week ago into the devices providing North American web traffic. The most useful piece of information from that is the confirmation that Android in the US is almost entirely represented by HTC and Motorola.

I'd like to see the figures in Europe and the UK. Andriod is making great strides but still has a long way to go. The thing that really surprised me was just how large a part of the market Apple has got.
