Less than two months after opening-up the code, Intel and Nokia's open source OS collaboration - MeeGo - has released version 1.0.

In a blog post, Imad Sousou and Valtteri Halla of the MeeGo technical steering group explained that this release provides a user experience specific to netbooks, and that the handset user experience will be opened-up in June.

"Releases are planned on a six month cadence," they said. "MeeGo v1.1 will be released in October and it will include support for touch-based devices, such as Handsets, Tablets, and In-Vehicle Infotainment systems. The development tree for MeeGo v1.1 is now open and we will start releasing various components in the v1.1 tree, including opening the development of the handset user experience in June."

With all the progress Apple and Google have made in the mobile OS field, not to mention whatever Microsoft, RIM and HP have up their sleeves, the pressure is on MeeGo to deliver something pretty good, pretty soon. Here's what they reckon are the highlights of MeeGo v1.0:

  • Visually rich Netbook user experience, building on the latest open source technologies.
  • Instant access to your synchronized calendar, tasks, appointments, recently used files and real-time social networking updates through the home screen.
  • Aggregation of your social networking content. This allows you to see your social networking activities on one screen, easily interact with your friends, and update your status and site information.
  • For a fast and rich Internet experience the MeeGo Netbook user experience integrates Google Chrome or, if you prefer a fully open source browser solution, Google Chromium is also provided. Soon we will be releasing the MeeGo Handset user experience which will use the Fennec Mozilla Browser.
  • Easy to use applications for email, calendar and media player.
  • Highly optimized for power and performance.
  • Languages: Japanese, Korean, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Swedish, Polish, Finnish, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Dutch, English, British English

Hey,

I'm going to presume you acted on my heads-up in the other thread, and take full credit for this news story :p

Anyways, I installed this on my Dell Mini 9 last week - in general it's blisteringly fast at both startup and navigation within the OS. The UI is great - simple, intuitive and very quick.

However - it is pretty buggy and has various quirks with navigation, power management, networking etc. etc. It's a very promising OS though, and I'm sure they guys at MeeGo will have things ironed out in the next release :)

i just tried it on my dell mini 9 too, but i have to fart around to get the wifi drivers to work. it boots quickly from usb flashdrive, but i could boot and get a webpage on firefox within 30 seconds using osx so it's not really noticeably faster in a real world enviroment. it might boot faster on a laptop or desktop than windows but it's not really designed for that use. using it on an old pc to make it work as an internet/mp3 playing device might be interesting, but i'm not sure if it would support an old system
From what I understand, driver etc issues are meant to be resolved by the companies pre-installing Meego on their hardware - it has a small list of compatible hardware for demo purposes, but it doesn't seem to be shipped as a complete product. Maybe someone will make a Meego distro with all the extras
uni, are you using the stock Dell wifi card (the Broadcom one)? I swapped mine out for an Intel 5100, so it works fine. There is a workaround to add the Broadcom drivers in on the MeeGo forums.

yeah, all stock apart from 2gb ram upgrade, it's got the stock 8gb SSD. i saw the fix on the dell mini 9 forum but it involved a bit of typing and i didn't have the netbook connected via ethernet so making it a bit akward to get the driver etc. it'll be easier when hardwired and i can get downloaded to the flashdrive and cut and paste the commands into terminal as there was a bit of typing and i'm not used to linux so gotta take my time to make sure i don't make mistakes, whereas with windows i can do most things with my eyes closed

it would also be nice to get it to work with my 3 usb 3g dongle. it looked like it picked up the 16gb sdhc card but i didn't check to see if it could read it
