Condensed timeline

Acer's PR department is being kept nice and busy this week. Having launched its AMD server range on Monday, it unveiled a bunch of new notebooks two days later.

The highlights were the evolution of the Timeline thin-and-light range into the TimelineX and an early look at a high-end multimedia range called Ethos.

The TimelineX is being positioned as the best of both worlds regarding performance and battery life. Intel's Arrandale range of mobile processors with integrated graphics is brought to the party, while Acer has tweaked the systems to preserve battery life, including a PowerSmart button, and is claiming up to 12 hours battery life as a consequence.

The Ethos range will include an 18.4 inch model with 1920x1080 resolution and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5000 series graphics. There are also five integrated speakers - including a subwoofer - and third generation Dolby Home Theater technology combined with CineSurround and True 5.1 output.

We don't have full specs and pricing yet, although we expect the Timelines to be in the same area as the current generation and the Ethos to start at over a grand. The new Timelines will be available to buy in a month or so, but we won't see the Ethos range until end June/early July. Also launched were the Acer Aspire x745 and x741 series.

Pros: Core i3/5/7 CPUs, GbE, 8hrs battery life by default.
Cons: ATI graphics - meaning no “Optimus” :/, 12hrs battery life if you buy the 9cell upgrade
Oh dear! Why did they ruin the 1830t with a Core Solo? It was looking like quite a winner, with WPAN and WWAN and 1366x768 display.
