Many cores

Chip-maker AMD has announced the launch of its 12-core server processor, codenamed Magny Cours. The AMD Opteron 6000 series claims to offer "...the world's first 8- and 12-core x86 processor for the high-volume 2P and value 4P server market."

Magny Cours is the successor to AMD's ‘Istanbul' six core processor. It markes the launch of the Opteron 6000 series, but Magny Cours CPUs will all be in the 6100 series. As you would expect, it promises around twice the performance of the previous Opteron generation, can be used in both 2P and 4P designs and is forward-compatible with the next generation ‘Bulldozer' CPU architecture.

"As AMD has done before, we are again redefining the server market based on current customer requirements," said Patrick Patla, VP and GM of the server and embedded divisions at AMD. "The AMD Opteron 6000 Series platform signals a new era of server value, significantly disrupts today's server economics and provides the performance-per-watt, value and consistency customers demand for their real-world data center workloads."

HEXUS.channel is at a joint AMD/Acer event in Milan today, at which a new Acer server range featuring, we expect, some of these processors will be launched, so watch this space. In the meantime, we'll leave you with this AMD demo of how much better Magny Cours is than the previous generation.
