A belated cutting edge

Nearly a year since Western Digital decided it was time it looked into this new, fangled solid-state drive business, and bought SiliconSystems, it has finally delivered a consumer offering.

The WD SiliconEdge (a clear reference to their ancestry) Blue SSDs come in capacities up to 256GB, with a native SATA 3.0 Gb/s interface offering read speeds up to 250 MB/s and write transfer rates up to 170 MB/s. They're being targeted at the high-end consumer.

"The development of the WD SiliconEdge Blue product family leverages WD's extensive experience in designing and manufacturing highly reliable storage products and the company's worldwide sales and distribution network to accelerate SSD technology adoption by OEMs, technology enthusiasts, gamers and road warriors," said Michael Hajeck, SVP and GM of WD's solid state storage business unit.

WD says these drives are already available in the channel, but has so far only offered dollar pricing. Here it is:

  • 64 GB - $279
  • 128 GB - $529
  • 256 GB - $999

Will they even bother with a black edition? It's not like there are any moving parts and lots of heat generated…..and I doubt there will be a “green” model either…..
