Often overlooked in snapshots of the smartphone sector is Research In Motion (RIM), the company behind the BlackBerry mobile devices.

One possible reason for this is that they have become synonymous with push email, which may lead cause the broader functionality of the devices to be overlooked, but whatever the reason, sales of BlackBerry devices seem to be going from strength to strength.

So say RIM's Q3 earnings, which revealed 10.1 BlackBerry devices were shipped, yielding revenue of $3.92 billion - a 41 percent improvement on the same quarter a year ago. 4.4 million new BlackBerry subscriber accounts were also added in the quarter, making a total subscriber base of 36 million.

"We are pleased to report record shipments of more than 10 million BlackBerry smartphones during the third quarter with higher than expected revenue, earnings and subscriber growth," said Jim Balsillie, Co-CEO at RIM.

"RIM is experiencing a great start to the holiday buying season and the strong Q3 results and Q4 outlook clearly reflect the strength of our diversified product portfolio as well as the success of our efforts to expand into broader customer segments and new geographies while maintaining our strong position in North America."

While Android-based smartphones are hogging the headlines these days, this is a reminder that incumbent platforms have the inertia and are going to take some beating. RIM's shares jumped by over 12 percent in after-hours trading.
