Upper-class twits of the year

UK mobile phone maker INQ, which recently launched a handset designed specifically with social networking in mind, has published a list of what it has calculated the most influential UK users of micro-blogging service Twitter.

The influence calculation is based on the amount of Twitter activity associated with the person in question, not just their total number of followers. So the the number of tweets they send, how often they are retweeted and the number of times they're referred to in other people's tweets are all factors.

Undoubtedly the UK's best known Twitter users is comedian Stephen Fry, but it turns out that he's only number two on the list. Number one is Pete Cashmore, the Scottish publisher and editor of social media blog Mashable. Furthermore, Cashmore is also top of the global list too.

"In the UK we've become used to hearing stories about celebrities going head to head in the fight for followers with Stephen Fry publicly losing his lead to Eddie Izzard and Richard Bacon," said an unnamed INQ spokesperson. "However, it actually gets more interesting when you look at who has the most impact. Even though Richard Bacon now has more followers than Stephen Fry, Stephen still holds more influence to date."

Here are the two tables, although their legitimacy must be called into question by the omission of HEXUS.channel and its 568 followers. There's also a clip of the Monty Python twit sketch, because it's worth it.
