Willing in the name

Here at HEXUS.channel we're far too grown-up and busy to either watch X Factor or follow the music charts, but apparently the Christmas number one for the past few years has always been sung by the winner of said talent show.

We have, however, seen enough evidence to suggest that typical output from X Factor is sanitised, syrupy pop interspersed with gratuitous, showy vocal gymnastics, so we must sympathise with those people who still care about the Christmas number one and are dismayed by its X Factor domination.

Therefore we felt compelled to share with you the news that a Facebook page and associated group have been created in order to campaign for the 1992 Rage Against The Machine single: Killing In The Name to be the Christmas number one by virtue of being bought by the most people.

For the uninitiated, RATM were an awesome metal/rap fusion act fronted by the very angry Zack de la Rocha. While the riffs in Killing In The Name are classics, the song is probably best known for de la Rocha's refrain at the end of the track: "F*ck you I won't do what you tell me!" Inspiring stuff.

Far be it for us to tell you where to spend your money, but we'll certainly be buying Killing In The Name and laughing until we strain something if it makes it to number one. The cheapest price we've seen is 50p on 7digital, although we heartily recommend the album as an all-time classic. The same track costs 65p on Play.com, while Apple wants 99p from you if you buy it from iTunes.

Incidentally, the Spotify business model became a bit clearer while we were researching this story, but not much. When we first clicked on the buy link (7digital provides the e-commerce back-end) it wanted £1.19 from us, but buying the same track from another RATM album reduced the price to 50p. Odd.
