Computer maker LG has joined forces with MTV and others in the campaign against sexting - the act of sharing steamy sexual photos, videos or messages via mobile phone or online.

According to a recent Associated Press-MTV poll, over 25 per cent of today's youth have sexted in one form or other, despite publicised cases of criminal charges and even suicides being linked to the phenomenon.

Polling 1,247 teenagers and adults between the ages of 14-24, The AP-MTV survey revealed that half those surveyed knew how serious the consequences of sexting could be, but didn't care enough to stop doing it.

Worryingly, the results show that half of all those polled claimed to have been targets of digital bullying themselves, perhaps unsurprising considering teens across America are sending more than 20,000 texts per second.

Young adults were the most prevalent sexters, with a third of those polled admitting to have digitally done the deed, compared to just a quarter of kids in their teens.

Most who said they sent naked pictures of themselves via text or webcam said they had done it for their boyfriend, girlfriend or romantic interest, but a whopping 14 per cent said fessed up to suspecting the receiver had passed the pictures on without permission.

Backing that up, seventeen per cent of people who said they had been sent a naked picture admitted to passing it on to at least one other person, if not several.

10 percent of all those surveyed said they had sent out naked pictures of themselves on their cell phone or online.

Boys were found to be more likely to see and pass on naked pictures or videos they had been sent without consent, with many putting the reason down to "boredom".
