Now there’s an idea
Japanese electronics giant Sony has raised eyebrows by announcing plans to launch an online media store as part of a general strategic overhaul.
Businessweek.com reports that Kazuo Hirai, EVP for networked products and services at Sony, said the provisionally named Sony Online Service will be based on the PlayStation Network and will be an attempt to link its unique range of computing and consumer electronics products
"There's some debate as to whether all PlayStation Network users would migrate to the new service, we would target quite a few of them," said Hirai. "The new online service will be one key factor as we introduce new types of mobile products."
There appear to be few other details, such as what form it will take or even when we can expect to see it. However, Sony did provide an outline of its strategic objectives for the period ending 31 March 2013.
- Target consistent profitability in core hardware businesses (TV, game and digital imaging)
- Provide new user experiences integrating innovative hardware, software and services
- Reach out to new customers and develop new geographic markets
- Increase Sony's focus on environmentally conscious products and processes
Other recent product launches include a new version of its e-reader called the Sony Reader Daily Edition. But this, like its other e-readers, seems to be just a US proposition right now.
