Wise counsel

Better late than never, Intel has announced it has hired a seasoned antitrust specialist as the firm's new general counsel, just a day after putting aside the company's legal differences with AMD.

Douglas Melamed, who will join Intel as a senior vice president and report directly to CEO, Paul Otellini, will be responsible for overseeing all Intel legal matters as well as corporate and government affairs.

"We're extremely pleased to have Doug join the Intel team," Otellini said. "His breadth of experience and legal expertise combined with his background in government are an outstanding fit for us."

Melamed served as acting assistant attorney general in charge of the Justice Department's antitrust division, where he worked from 1996 to 2001. He was also, most recently, a partner at WilmerHale, a global law firm where he was a leader in its Regulatory and Government Affairs Department and served as a member of the Antitrust and Competition Practice Group in the Washington, DC office.

Indeed, Intel boasts Melamed "has an extensive background in all aspects of antitrust practice," and "has counseled numerous firms on a wide range of antitrust matters."

Too bad he wasn't onboard to help Intel avoid a 1.06 billion Euro fine earlier this year or the $1.25 billion settlement with AMD, then. Melamed will be able to help Intel stick to newly agreed business practices provisions (detailed on the next page), however, which were also part of the AMD settlement deal.
