Snazzy new OS for smart phones
One of the highlights of IDF's day one was the unveiling of an updated version of Intel's Linux operating system, Moblin.
Moblin 2.1 is Intel's latest version of the software, which has now been specifically tinkered with in order to make it "phone friendly". Intel is clearly hoping to push its OS out with upcoming Moorestown MIDs (Mobile Internet Devices), but the firm is also touting it as ideal for netbooks due to its clean and minimalist interface and minimal system requirements.
The software is based on a Firefox-derived Fennec mobile browser and is Flash and Silverlight-friendly to allow interactive apps to run within web pages, an advantage over Apple's iPhone interface. The software's support of Microsoft's Silverlight also means developers will be able to make apps for the OS on both Windows and Moblin.
