Basic instinct

Giant e-tailer Amazon has taken a further step towards mimicking the behaviour of supermarkets by launching an ‘own-brand' range of products.

AmazonBasics is positioned in a similar way to the own-brand value ranges you find in Tescos or Sainsburys, with the emphasis on plain, WYSIWYG packaging and low prices. This sort of thing is especially applicable to highly commoditised products, where flashy branding is less likely to influence a purchasing decision.

Initially, the range is limited to blank optical media and computing/AV cables and restricted to the US site. However, Amazon intends to expand both the range and international availability in the next few months.

"We saw an opportunity to create a line of consumer electronics basics that combine quality and low prices for an overall focus on value," said Paul Ryder, VP of consumer electronics at Amazon. "We will continue to gather input from customers and evaluate opportunities for new products under the AmazonBasics brand."

Amazon has some heritage in developing other private-label brands for sale on the site and, of course, it sells the Kindle e-reader with the Amazon logo on it. But this move opens a whole new Pandora 's Box of Amazon competing with with the third party brands it already offers. However, given the ubiquity of this phenomenon in supermarkets, we would be surprised if this move causes too many problems between them.

Not only are they releasing their own brand electrons accessories but they are are also delivering them in “frustration free” packaging (http://tinyurl.com/lklwbm). No more of those stupid plastic clamshell type packaging. I personally can't wait until this comes to the UK.
Heat-sealed plastic is patently the work of Beelzebub and probably heralds the coming apocalypse.

I think this sounds like this could be interesting though!
