Reshuffle

As widely reported this morning Pat Gelsinger, who previously headed-up the digital enterprise group at Intel, is moving on. At the same time, Intel has decided to re-jig its senior organisational structure around three execs.

All Intel's major product divisions will be grouped into the newly formed Intel Architecture Group (IAG), which will be co-managed by Sean Maloney and Dadi Perlmutter, who will be in charge of commercial matters and product development, respectively.

Then there's the Technology and Manufacturing Group (TMG), headed-up by chief administrative office Andy Bryant, which deals with the manufacturing side of things. Lastly, following Maloney's promotion, the Sales and Marketing Group (SMG) will now be headed-up by Tom Kilroy.

Intel is trying to imply that the reshuffle and Gelsinger's departure (destination not stated) are unrelated, but that seems pretty implausible. What isn't clear is which came first: him leaving or the reshuffle. As you'll see from the make-up of the IAG, is seems possible that Gelsinger was slated to be merely one of the business heads within that group, which may well have been unacceptable to him.

The IAG is split into six bits. Here's each one with its group head:

  • PC Client - desktop and mobile PCs - Mooly Eden
  • Datacentre products - servers and networking - Kirk Skaugen
  • Visual computing - advanced visualisation (Larrabee?) - Jim Johnson
  • Ultra Mobility - handheld devices - Anand Chandrasekher
  • Embedded products - self explanatory - Doug Davis
  • Digital home - consumer electronics - Eric Kim

General counsel Bruce Sewell is also leaving, presumably to get a bit of rest. Intel CEO Paul Otellini offered up the usual perfunctory send-off: "We thank Pat and Bruce for many years of service to Intel and wish them well in their future endeavours," he said.

UPDATE - 15:10, 14 September 2009:

EMC has now confirmed Gelsinger's appointment.
