TV is just pretend

This has nothing to do with the tech sector, but it is a cautionary tale, not only for journalists, but for any consumer of online media. It's also quite amusing.

Earlier this week, shadow home secretary Chris Grayling, in an attempt to illustrate how much Britain has gone down the toilet while Labour has been in charge, made a speech in which he compared urban Britain to US hit TV show The Wire, which is set in crime-ridden inner city Baltimore and has been having an extended run on BBC2 this summer.

Notorious political blogger Guido Fawkes brought our attention to the story of an apparent press release written by the mayor of Baltimore, objecting to the inference that Baltimore is accurately represented by the fictional TV series.

An additional irritation seemed to be that, violent though it is, the murder rate in The Wire is still less than in our own Midsomer Murders, and there was even a YouTube clip (below) released to emphasise the point.
