When, not if, surely

Speculation around Dell entering the mobile phone market has been around for some time now, but tech blog TechCrunch has speculated that Dell will be unveiling a handset in China this week. The site seems to be basing this story on a single source and says the information it has received is "extremely thin".

Michael Dell himself insinuated that Dell was working on some kind of small screen device back in March and the assumption was that he was referring to a smartphone. Acer is already being pretty pro-active in the smartphone market and HP has been dabbling for years, so it would be surprising not to see Dell have a go.

What will be interesting to see, whenever Dell finally does enter the smartphone market, is what operating system it uses. HP and Acer have predominantly stuck with Windows mobile so far, but there is growing momentum behind Google's Android OS, with Acer announcing it was going to launch Android handsets by the end of this year.

Motorola is expected to have a couple of new Android handsets in the next few months called Sholes and Morrison. HTC recently launched the Android based Hero too, so Microsoft better hurry up and launch Windows Mobile 7.0, and make it good, because it's swimming against the current right now.
