Denial symptoms

Microblogging site Twitter was the victim of a denial of service attack at around 3pm today, which took the site down.

At time of writing, Twitter had updated its status to say that it was back up again, but still battling the DoS beast. Our Tweetdeck has started updating again, after a pause of around an hour, but we couldn't access the Twitter website last time we tried.

This piece of cyber-terrorism comes soon after Twitter founder Ev Williams revealed that London is the Capital of Twitter in an interview on BBC2's Newsnight.

The big question, however, is what were the knock-on effects of this microblogging suffocation? We still have basic amenities like water and electricity here at HEXUS, but perhaps we're just the lucky ones. We'd like to hear from anyone stranded by the Twitter outage and what measures they had to take to overcome it.

Didn't notice, but then I got bored of it so quickly I'm afraid, just like Myspace & Farcebook. More to life…

It's a shame all three of them couldn't go down indefinitely.
Personally I don't get twitter and did have a smile on my face when I saw the bbc story just now…..

I just do not get it…….what's wrong with websites, text messages, emails, forums and blogs (another small hate of mine!) that you feel the need for another communications medium? And to top it, it only supports short messages!

It screams “attention whore” when you can't have your breakfast or take the dog for a walk without %^&*(" tweeting it.

I use Twitter, but I get really pissed off with the “attention whores” that you refer to, the ones that tell you that they are currently at work, that they have completed a programing module, that they are going to the toilet, that they are going to lunch at the following co-ordinates and would anyone like to join them….

If someone fits into that catagory I usually unfollow them within a day.

It is useful, and interesting, but I find myself submitting to these forums more often than I tweet (as I am more likely to get feedback).

In fact that is the primary problem I have with mordern social networking, the lack of feedback on systems like Bebo, Facebook, etc…. I like forums though, but they tend to limit my scope of contact.
