Significant?

Financial news site Bloomberg has credited the good old "person familiar with the matter" as the anonymous source for the news that Intel will be supplying Nokia with mobile processors.

The details of the processors or what devices they will appear in aren't revealed in the story, but it does say that Intel will be formally announcing the news today in a special "important announcement" from Intel head of ultra-mobility Anand Chandrasekher.

Intel is putting a high priority on gaining entrance to the smartphone market. The roadmap for its low power Atom family of processors has them getting smaller and lower power yet, but it's competing against the ARM ecosystem, which specialises in mobile phone chips and currently dominates the market.

Nokia remains the world's biggest mobile phone handset maker, but it's in danger of being overtaken in the battle for the next generation of smartphones as companies like Apple, RIM, Samsung, etc focus on this sector.

This could be the start of a relationship that defines the strategies of both Nokia and Intel in the smartphone market for years to come. Then again, it could be something much smaller. Hopefully we'll find out for sure later today.

I really hope they don't!

Any chance they're just going intel for their tablets/netbooks?
