The search for market share

It seems to be market research Wednesday today and this latest report gives us an indication of the early popularity of Microsoft's new search engine - Bing.

Using the intriguing metric of ‘average daily penetration', online market researcher comScore reveals a jump in US searcher penetration for Microsoft sites for the period in which Bing was launched. Microsoft's share of search result pages also increased in that time.

"These initial data suggest that Microsoft Bing has generated early interest, resulting in a spike in search engagement and an immediate term improvement to Microsoft's position in the search market," said Mike Hurt, comScore senior VP.

"So far it appears that the lifts in searcher penetration and engagement have held relatively steady throughout the five-day period. The ultimate performance of Bing depends on the extent to which it generates more trial through its extensive launch campaign and whether it retains those trial users. It appears it is off to a good start."

We'd like to hear from any readers who've used Bing. Is it any good? Will you be switching from Google? Let us know in the HEXUS.community discussion forums.

Presumably you had already set them away from default in IE8 then?

IE8 is a critical windows update. If you install that, then the default search bar provider *was* Live, now it's bing.

And as for it being any good? Well the results are okay, but the presentation of the results is horrible compared to the simple approach of Google.
