Diversification

Chip giant Intel has positioned itself in the middle of two of the predominant trends revealed at this year's Computex: low power processors and diversification.

As we wrote from the show, our future mobile smart devices will most probably have a CPU made by Intel or based on an ARM design and the battle between these two companies to dominate that market will be one of the enduring themes in the tech industry for years to come.

While, for Intel, this could be viewed as the natural evolution of the Atom CPU, it also represents a significant diversification for the chip giant, into a new market with new competitors and sales channels.

Most of the major technology companies we spoke to at Computex are busy diversifying their product offering, and a further reminder of how committed Intel is to doing just that came in the form of the acquisition of Wind River Systems for $884 million last week.
