Moving up-market

ASUS and Acer are continuing their battle for supremacy in the sub-notebook space. Acer has only recently launched its Timeline series of thin-and-light notebooks using Intels CULV (consumer ultra-low voltage) processor and ASUS has shot back with the U Series.

The big difference with the ASUS launch, however, is price. While the Timeline range can be found between £549 and £799 at UK e-tailers, ASUS is advising a price range from £799-£999 for the U Series.

Let's not forget that ‘thin-and-light' notebooks have been available for some time now, but prices were always in four figures. The point of platforms like Intel's CULV and AMD's Yukon was supposed to be to offer this kind of mobility but at a mid-market price point.

So pricing its offering at a couple of hundred quid above its closest competitor is a brave move by ASUS, let's have a look at the U Series to see why it thinks you should pay the extra.
