Growing the market

When netbooks were first launched they were half the size and half the price of regular notebooks. Ever since, they've growing in both respects as OEMs try to differentiate themselves in the only part of the PC market showing any growth right now.

Acer has taken this evolution one step further with the launch of its Aspire One 751, Acer's biggest netbook yet, with a screen size of 11.6 inches.

It runs on an Intel Atom Z520 CPU, comes with 1GB memory, a 160GB HDD, weighs 1.35kg and claims up to seven hours battery life. The bad news is that it costs more than an entry-level notebook, with an expected street price of £379.99 in the UK.

Acer has also upgraded its D150 family of netbooks with the release of the D250. It's not obvious what specifically has been upgraded, but the D250 is expected to come in at £329.99, with the prices of the full D150 range being dropped to make room for it.

If you fancy a bit of 3G with your netbook, you can get a D250 with a bigger battery and 3G connectivity for a hefty £479.99.

Acer is hoping to these and its other new launches, like the Timeline thin and light notebook, will become available in the UK on Bank Holiday Monday - 25 May.

I like the use of the lower power Atom Z-series processor, but £380 is far too much.

Now, if they'd coupled it with an ION chipset they might have a case…
yeah that price is way over the top, if i was to spend that much i would buy a laptop
As Acer sell a laptop for Ā£399 with a 15.6 inch screen, T4200, 3gb of ram and a 160GB HDD I know which I would be buying…

More the the point you can get fully featured laptops a lot cheaper or ultraportables with more power for not much more. An 11.6“ netbook's a bit betwixt and between - it's not really powerful enough to justify itself as an ultraportable laptop, but it's too expensive to really be a netbook.

I wish netbooks would get back to where they belong: sub £300 and 9” or 10" screens, with 945 chipsets which are more than good enough for websurfing and email, with a better uptake of Yukon / Congo and ION in the space above that - ultraportables for £300 - £500. Also, Intel really need to get their rears into gear and release dual-core Atom N- and Z- series processors with EIST that are suitable for that ultraportable range, because the single-core N- and Z- series really don't cut it for machines costing more than £300, and no-one is going to put a 330 in a netbook when it doesn't support EIST so is going to kill battery life…
