HEXUS.sharewatch: Microsoft gains as rally stalls

Having scraped a small gain last week, the Dow Jones ended its week-on-week rally of nearly two months by finishing down 0.7 percent last week. The NASDAQ and FTSE still managed modest gains, however.

The share prices of the companies on our list were mostly flat or slightly negative as a number of them announced their quarterly earnings.

IBM's earnings were stable, while AMD reported yet another loss. Both companies finished slightly down on the week. Yahoo!, meanwhile, announced a fall in profits, but its share price was rewarded for plans to continue to cut costs.

The big winner on our list was Microsoft, despite the announcement of its first quarterly fall in revenue since it went public over 20 years ago. The figures were more or less in line with expectations and it looks like that, combined with the growing buzz around Windows 7, was enough to give Microsoft's shares a big boost after the earnings announcement.
