Strategic shift

Networking giant Cisco has unveiled a major strategic shift with the announcement of its Unified Computing System (UCS).

This is being positioned as a new data centre architecture and an open ecosystem of partners focused on making the most of virtualisation. This is done by combining computing, networking, storage access and virtualisation resources into one system.

"The Virtual Machine has become the new atomic building block of the data center, creating new challenges and opportunities with the potential to transform the computing environment and deliver significant benefits," said Mario Mazzola, senior VP of the Server Access and Virtualization Business Unit at Cisco.

"Taking advantage of this architectural shift in the data center, we developed a unique new computing model that transforms the data center into a dynamic IT environment with the power to increase productivity, improve business agility and drive the benefits of virtualization to an entirely new level."
