Microsoft releases Vista SP2 RC

The Microsoft Windows blog has announced the availability of service pack 2 (SP2) for Vista and Server 2008 is available as a release candidate for subscribers to TechNet and MSDN to download. General availability is expected in "the very near future."

There is also a notable changes page in the blog. "In addition to all previously released updates, SP2 will contain changes focused on supporting new types of hardware and adding support for several emerging standards," says the page.

"SP2 will also continue to make it easier for IT administrators to deploy and manage large installations of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008."

Among the notable changes are:

  • Support for the new VIA 64-bit CPU
  • Support for Bluetooth 2.1
  • The ability to record to Blu-ray media
  • Windows search 4.0
  • Hyper-V virtualization environment fully integrated into Windows Server 2008
